The writing process is done and the arrangements are solid. Instrumentally, things can be added or removed. Is the song too long, not long enough, or does it matter? Have you factored in the textures of percussion, the specialty of a fiddle, pedal steel, the difference an acoustic with nylon strings makes? What about backing vocal arrangements? And let’s not forget about drum sounds, which can be an overwhelming decision. It’s vital all the above (and more) is thought out with a flexible plan BEFORE you step into the studio. A production plan is an absolute pain and pay saving investment!
You’re in the studio with a song or group of songs you’ve deemed record-ready. The arrangements are down, and your production vision is clear. Your engineer is a technical wiz but doesn’t offer much in the way of optional approaches to your project. Prioritizing and optimizing your time and scheduling additional studio musicians to complete your vision may also be beyond their reach.
